The St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee has released a list of awards and trophies that will be presented to entries in today's parade.
All marching bands in the parade receive a trophy bearing the name of an Irish society or distinguished Irishman. All commercial entries in the parade also receive trophies.
Floats in the parade are judged in five categories:
* The Monsignor Daniel J. Bourke Award -- Named for the late Irish priest known as "Savannah's most beloved Irishman," this award will be presented to the best entry of a recognized Irish society or an Irish family.
* The Sgt. William Jasper Award -- Named for the Revolutionary War hero killed in the Siege of Savannah, this award will be presented to the entry best exemplifying Jasper's spirit of loyalty and perseverance.
* The Robert Emmet Award -- Named for the Irish patriot to whom Savannah's Emmet Park is dedicated, this award will be presented to the entry best depicting the Savannah area.
* The St. Patrick Award -- Named for the patron saint of Ireland who shepherded his flock from paganism to Christianity and became an enduring symbol of starting at the bottom, rising to the top and bringing multitudes along with him, this award will be presented to the entry best depicting the spirit of St. Patrick.
* Celtic Cross Award -- In Savannah, the Celtic Cross is a symbol of Irish heritage, connecting those who are participating in the celebration this year with their ancestors who came to this country years ago. This award will be presented to the entry best depicting this Irish heritage.
Winners will be identified in the parade by a banner carried in front of the unit.

The celebration of Saint Patrick's Day began first in Boston in 1737. It started as a religious holiday and many Irish Catholics still begin the day by going to mass. Each year, however, St. Patrick's Day becomes a more secular event honoring and celebrating Irish heritage and culture. What is a more fitting way to celebrate then to have a parade? And what better venue is there for a parade than historic downtown Savannah, GA?
